All These Places Feel Like Home

Sophia uses photography, video and drawing to tell personal
stories. For All These Places Feel Like Home, she wanted
to look at how we come to create our own sense of home,
separate from that where we grow up. When her family
first moved to Salt Spring Island from Vancouver in 1996,
she lived in tents for two years while building their house.
“Our kitchen, living and dining room area had a floor made
of cedar boughs and we ate, did homework and read by
candlelight or kerosone lamps around a big dining room
table. I invite visitors to sit at the table and look through my
photographs as they would their own family photos. They
have been taken over the past decade. From the time
I moved away from Salt Spring, my photos have been
gradually my own sense of home.” The photos are from
Salt Spring, Montreal, France, Toronto and some
spaces in between.
